How to generate Instagram hashtags in three steps
-
1
Describe the post
A couple of words is plenty. "Sourdough" beats "food"; "trail running" beats "fitness".
-
2
Read the three tiers
Broad, mid-size and niche, each with a note on what it is for.
-
3
Copy the balanced set
One button copies a ready-made blend weighted towards the tier that actually works.
Why tag size matters more than finding trending hashtags
Most tools that promise the best hashtags for Instagram just hand you the
biggest ones. Post to #food and you are competing with roughly
half a billion posts. Yours sits at the top of the recent feed for about four seconds.
Nobody sees it, and the tag has done nothing except take up a character
count.
Post to something with fifty thousand posts and you can hold the top of that feed for hours. Fewer people are looking, but the ones who are looking chose that tag specifically, which is why smaller tags convert better into follows and saves.
The working set uses both: a few large tags in case something catches, a majority of mid-size tags where you can realistically rank, and a handful of very specific ones that keep earning long after the post drops out of everything else.
How many Instagram hashtags to use
Instagram allows 30. Around 20 to 25 is the practical range, enough coverage without the caption looking like a wall of blue text.
The old advice about hiding tags in the first comment is worth retiring. Instagram has confirmed placement makes no difference to reach. Put them wherever keeps the caption readable; that is the only thing it affects.
Rotate your hashtag suggestions, or engagement drops
Pasting the same 30 tags onto every post is the pattern Instagram's spam detection is explicitly looking for. This is what people mean by a shadowban, though Instagram does not use the word. It does not usually produce a ban. It produces a quiet decline in reach that is very hard to diagnose from the inside, because nothing tells you it happened.
Changing roughly a third between posts is enough to stay clear of it, and it has a useful side effect: you find out which tags actually drive engagement and which never reach the explore page. Check the insights panel a few days later and look at reach from hashtags. If a tag has never appeared there, drop it.
Banned and restricted tags
Instagram restricts a long, unpublished and constantly changing list
of tags. Some are obviously problematic; many are ordinary words that got
overrun with spam. #desk and #valentinesday have
both been on it. One restricted tag can suppress the whole post.
Checking is quick: search the tag inside Instagram. If the recent posts section is missing or you see a warning notice, do not use it. Nothing in the sets generated here comes from the known-restricted lists, but the list moves, so a glance before posting is still worth it.
Once the caption is settled, save a reel straight from its share link. A good tag set on a clip you never saved is not much use.
Questions people actually ask
How many hashtags should I actually use?
Twenty to twenty-five. Thirty is the cap, but the last few rarely add anything.
Does it matter where I put them?
Not for reach. Instagram has said so directly. Caption or first comment, pick whichever looks better.
Should I use the same set every time?
No. That is the pattern spam detection watches for. Change about a third each post.
Do hashtags still work in 2026?
They work differently. They are no longer the main discovery route (that is the recommendation engine now), but they still tell Instagram what the post is about, and they still drive real traffic in smaller niches.
Where does this data come from?
Curated topic clusters, not scraped volume figures. Public volume numbers are stale the moment they are published, so tags are grouped by relative competition rather than given a fake precise count.
What are the best hashtags for Instagram in 2026?
There is no single best set. The ones that work are a mix of sizes matched to your account, which is exactly what the tiers above build for whatever you describe.
How do I find good hashtags for my niche?
Type two or three specific words about the post rather than one broad one. Specific seeds like sourdough or trail running return far more useful tags than food or fitness.
Can these hashtags get me shadowbanned?
Not on their own, but pasting an identical block on every post is the pattern Instagram watches for. Change about a third each time, which the set is built to make easy.
Are the generated hashtags free to copy?
Yes. Copy the balanced set or any single tag with one tap, no account and no limit.
Should hashtags go in the caption or the first comment?
It makes no difference to reach; Instagram has said so directly. Put them wherever keeps the caption readable.
